Earth Spleen Excess

The main function of the spleen/stomach energy system is the production of qi (energy) and blood from food, water and air. Its deficiency will therefore affect all other functions as it is with the kidneys, but from a different perspective with different keynotes. The spleen/stomach's function of producing blood and qi encompasses digestion, assimilation and the transformation of nutrients into bodily parts. These physiological functions of the spleen/stomach are mirrored in its mental and spiritual functions. It takes in the ideas and experiences that we have and "digests," "assimilates" and transforms them into our self-image and ego. The physical digestive function finds its counterpart in the mental realm in the reasoning process. Given that the system oversees the production of blood and qi (energy) that the other systems require for their functioning, its disorders will affect the entire well being of the person. The spleen/stomach energy is considered the harmonizer of the functions of the other systems, preventing their imbalances. To understand how this is so we must consider the fact that reasoning is the chief preventer and receiver of emotional disharmonies, which are major causes of illness through the stress they create. Digestive disorders physical and psychological--underline the various problems of the spleen/stomach system. The spleen governs reasoning, which prevents us from acting solely on the ideas generated from the kidneys; optimism, anger from the liver; unprocessed ideas and excitement from the heart; structures and grieving of the lungs. In Chinese Medicine the spleen is the harmonizer and the source of centering and earthing.
